Anyone crossing the Baloch Colony bypass from PECHS to DHA would have noticed a series of three supposed speed alert markings that warn fast drivers to slow down before a curve. However, these markings are more like speed bumps that rattle, shake and destroy vehicles that drive slow over them. So drivers have resorted to going even faster over them, as a faster speed apparently nullifies the overall effect and damage caused to the car.
The markings shake vehicles so much that at times cargo falls off lorries and motorcyclists are jolted off their seats. The most dangerous aspect of these markings is the fact that they have been made from slippery material. Vehicle tyres lose their grip when a car passes over these markings, increasing the risk of slippage at high speed.
Lastly, the sole purpose of the bypass was to reduce commuting time between PECHS and DHA. Yet long queues can be seen well before these markings causing tremendous difficulty for motorists trying to save time.
Before any untoward accident takes place, I request the Traffic Engineering Department to please follow international standards for speed alert markings and rectify all such markings immediately.
There are specific raised levels and specific anti-slip materials that are used to create such markings. The idea is to simply vibrate the wheels and not the whole car to alert drivers of a curve ahead. Perhaps a short trip to nearby Dubai may be helpful.
