LYARI Expressway is a relief for Karachiites even though only one side is functional. Now, thousands of car owners regularly use the Expressway daily to reach work.
The news that the second track is near completion is welcoming indeed. Once fully functional, it will take the traffic load off M.A. Jinnah Road and Sharea Faisal during morning and evening rush hours.
Even though traffic moves smoothly on the Expressway, there is heavy congestion at exit points. One such exit is Mauripur Road, which is perpetually busy owing to the movement of heavy vehicles. To make LEW trouble free, it is suggested that the traffic police set timings for heavy vehicles on Mauripur Road.
There should be no movement of trailers and trucks between 7am and 11am and between 4pm and 7pm during working days. This will allow a maximum number of cars to enter and exit the downtown and the business district during peak hours. It will also encourage drivers to use LEW more frequently taking the traffic load off other routes within the city.
The local government should allocate some of the LEW budget to Mauripur Road for more pedestrian bridges and fences.
